古代帝王在泰山上筑坛祭天称为「封」；在梁甫山除地祭地称为「禅」。秦汉时特重此礼。
史记．卷六．秦始皇本纪：「立石，与鲁诸儒生议，刻石颂秦德，议封禅望祭山川之事。」
唐．李商隐．韩碑诗：「传之七十有二代，以为封禅玉检明堂基。」
