The Grand Canal in China is the world’s longest canal, which runs 1794 kilometers from Beijing in the north to Hangzhou in the south. By linking the Yellow River, the Huai River, the Changjiang (Yangtze) River, and the Qiantang River, it serves as a most important waterway to transport water from South China to North China.
The tidal bore of the Qiantang River in the Gulf of Hangzhou of East China is the most spectacular in the world. The sprays of the surging tidal bore reach as high as 8.93 metres with a current velocity of 24 kilometres per hour. Its roar can be heard within a circumference of 22 kilometres. This accounts for a Chinese description that“the roar of the tidal bore sounds like ten thousand armies.”
